I always did good on the purchase. It is a nice machine, a little intimidating when i first looked at it being first time, Took a lesson at Joannes craft and fabric store. The girl showed me how to thread and use the parts I did it and it was amazing how great it performed. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of a serger inexperienced and scared this would be a great purchase. If you are experienced it is still a great serger. does what the more money ones do and cost less. It makes a lot of clicking noise and a strange noise like something is slipping. It did this right out of the box. I kept using it and it quit the slipping noise.The most important thing to remember is don't push the lifter bar up all the way if you use it a lot. I use mine heavily and the bar that lifts the foot is connected by a plastic piece. The pressure of pushing up the lever so much caused it to break therefore it wouldn't lift the foot. I had to replace this piece myself because there is no authorized repair shop near my home and they said it would take a couple weeks to get to it.So remember, don't lift the foot all the way and it will be fine. Threading is a snap- it's literally as easy as one-two-three-four. Thread each spool in the order noted by the numbers on the front of the machine, then follow the color coded thread routes. Suprisingly enough, I didnt even need my reading glasses to thread it!I also have the Brother 2340CV coverhem machine. It produces the most professional hems and topstitching you have ever seen. I use it on all types of fabrics, both knits and woven. I even use it to see swimwear. It is important to ensure that you adjust the tension properly on this serger when you are using it to ensure that you get the best results. I have not tried it on heavy duty material such as denim but it works on upholstery fabric quite well. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who does sewing for recreation, as a hobby or for small scale clothing production. I was concerned about threading after hear comments from a coworker about how much trouble she had with her serger. This serger comes with color coded thread (already threaded and ready to use) and a color coded path for each thread. The first day I got the machine I took out and put in all new thread without problems. I am experimenting with the different stiches, which work great. Once I figured out the threading, it was an amazing sewing experience. I resisted for years on purchasing a serger and am now kicking myself for not getting one sooner!This machine does well on very fine fabrics as well as heavier denims. Any problems I have had with the machine have always been user error!I highly recomend it for beginners. Practice makes perfect as far as threading goes. The only thing I have had to replace are the scissors. WATCH OUT.. if you sew over a pin it will dull the scissors. sergers do NOT sew over pins like regular sewing machines!! I have taught lots of youngsters how to sew with my brother serger too! it's an awesome easy to use serger that lasts and lasts. I finally figured out the issue. At one point the body on the 1034D was shortened, so the part I ordered was shorter in length and would not fit my machine. It turns out, I needed the longer shaft and was able to find one myself at a sewing machine repair center in West Palm Beach, FL (Not Brother). It is now in service with a local business man in my area. Can't wait to finally use it.
