I wish to share my mobile phone connection with my laptop. Both are on windows 10. I understand this is called usb tethering and that it should work easily. However, I can't manage to have internet.

  1. Connect your phone with Windows 10 using a USB cable.
  2. If asked to enable file transfer feature, cancel it.
  3. Usually, there is a prompt available as soon as you connect,saying “Tethering or Hotspot active—Tap to setup.” Tap on it.
  4. If there is no prompt, go to Settings > Network and Internet > Hotspot and Tethering > Toggle on USB tethering.

The setup will automatically create a new network adapter in Windows 10. The computer will be connected to the internet using that. If you open Network settings in Windows 10, this is how it will look like.

Make sure that WiFi on your phone is turned off. If it is connected to an existing network, USB tethering will be disabled. If you see it as enabled, the tethering is successful.

Note: The location of Tethering can be different for every phone, especially on a customized OS like those from RealMe, Redmi, Samsung, or any other phone. However, they are clubbed with Mobile and Data Network section.

Windows uses Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device network adapter to make USB tethering possible on Windows 10. So if it stops working for you all of a sudden, check this:

1] Basic Check

  • Wifi-enabled automatically
  • USB cable disconnected
  • Accidentally turned off tethering

2] Update the NDIS driver using the Device Manager

  • Use WIN+X+M to open Device Manager
  • Expand the network section, and locate NDIS.
  • Right-click, and check if there is an update available.
  • If there is no update, then can manually browse for and locate USB RNDIS6 Adapter. Update it.
  • Restart the computer.

  1. Go to desktop and click the Start button
  2. In the search box, type device manager
  3. Click Device Manager in the menu
  4. In the Device Manager window, look for Network Adapters
  5. Expand Network Adapters
  6. Under Network Adapter, right-click Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device
  7. Select Properties > Drivers
  8. Click Update Drivers
  9. Click Browse my computer for driver software
  10. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
  11. Uncheck the box that says Show compatible hardware
  12. Under the Manufacturer section, select Microsoft as manufacturer
  13. Click Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device
  14. Click Next
  15. Wait until the process completes. The Device Manager will install the correct driver from the database
  16. Turn Off tethering and switch it On again

Solution for lag or freezing issues in USB tethering

Sometimes the Windows 10 system freezes during USB tethering or there might be a lag in the USB connection.

This issue is caused by RNDIS5 (Remote Network Driver Interface Specification driver version 5), an old device driver for Windows 10.

There is an issue where Windows 10 keeps on reverting back to this driver. The solution to this USB problem is to make Windows 10 use RNDIS 6. Remember, selecting any other driver other than RNDIS 6 will not work to resolve the issue.

If you are experiencing this problem, try the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the issue.

However, first you need to verify Windows 10 is using RNDIS5 by following steps set out below:

  1. Go to desktop and click the Start button
  2. In the search box, type device manager
  3. Click Device Manager in the menu
  4. In the Device Manager window, look for Network Adapters
  5. Expand Network Adapters
  6. Plug in your device and enable USB tethering so that your device is detected as a Remote NDIS based device
  7. You will now see a new entry created under Network Adapter that is named as “[Your Device Name] Remote NDIS based [internet Sharing/network] Device.”
  8. Right-click [Your Device Name] Remote NDIS based [internet Sharing/network] Device and select Properties

You can see the driver files now. If the files are named as usb8023x.sys and rndismpx.sys, your system is using the RNDIS 5 driver. If one of the driver files is named as “rndismp6.sys”, you are using the RNDIS 6 driver.

Follow the steps given below if your system is using the RNDIS 5 driver

  1. Click “This PC” on the desktop to open Windows Explorer
  2. Go to C:WindowsINFfolder
  3. Look for the file wceisvista.inf(RNDIS5.1)

Take ownership of the file and grant yourself permissions to rename the file by performing the steps set out below:

  2. Click the Command Prompt (Admin)
  3. Click Yes on any Account Control messages that are displayed
  4. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt window and press enter after each command
    – takeown /f “C:WindowsINFwceisvista.inf”
    – icacls “C:WindowsINFwceisvista.inf” /grant (username):F
